La Future

The future is a scary place. It's full of decision-making, bill-paying, ordering your own pizza AND paying for it yourself! That's scary.
I think every teenager knows this feeling. Anxiety, dread, anticipation, and excitement are all bouncing around us like bumblebees in the hive. Half the time I can't wait to get to to college and really start seeing what life has to offer me. ('Bring It On: Again'-style) Other times I plead with the universe to let me sleep and then magically wake up when I'm 24 with a gorgeous apartment, dream job, and life I've dreamt of. (à la 'Sixteen Wishes') Still other times I wish I was six again and could re-live my whole life until this point. (I was six 11 years ago. Gulp.)

Ever since I was probably about seven (having outgrown the phase where I wanted to be a garbage collector) I've wanted to be an author. I've loved story telling and new ideas are constantly popping up in my head. I've also always enjoyed the freedom to travel and see our world. I'd love to be an author, and I absolutely adore my creative outlet here as well. Too many adults have now planted the idea that writer = no money, and no money = no travel.
First of all....great message to give to someone who just told you how enthusiastic they were about chasing after their dream! I can't really be mad at most of you because you had my best interest at heart. Secondly, where did the idea that devoting your life to an art means you'll earn pennies instead of pounds? Um hello, J.K. Rowling? I mean, she's the extreme case but....still.

This got me over thinking (as everything does) and, in a moment of weakness I'll admit, I decided 'eh, I guess I can just be a lawyer'. Now, I've spent waaay too many nights awake in bed pondering this decision. Sobbing over it. Crying out to the Universe/God "tell me what to do!"

Recently, my tune has changed. After some life-altering advice from Amrita, best friend and spiritual guide to life (as well as resident dim bass), and (more reserved) encouragement from my mother I've decided I simply have to give my dreams of being an author and a writer a try. I mean, how many bitter adults do I know that hate their jobs and basically live unhappy existences? Too many. That's not life. At least, it won't be my life.

I also stopped begging for someone to tell me what to do--it's my life, it's my decision. I started asking for whoever is up There to simply give me the courage to follow my dreams. (And existentially I suppose begging my own subconscious to give my present self the courage) And while I'm pursuing these dreams, I can also be studying for a law degree--just in case. It never hurts to have a backup plan and, if you're anything like me, it's almost necessary to allow normal life and breathing functions to occur.

I know that anywhere I end up, I'll have people that love me and support me and that's so critical. Now I just have to decide what I'm doing with my life.

As teenagers, we're the moodiest, most-stressed out age group there is. I mean, we aren't supposed to drink before we're 21, we can't get tattoos or vote until we're 18, and we can't even drive until we've passed like 80 tests and have turned 16/17 but by all means let's make decisions that will affect the rest of our lives right around this time.
Look, this time isn't easy for any of us. It's stressful and hella confusing, emotionally and mentally. Not to mention exhausting. If you compare yourself to others (which I strongly recommend you almost never do) and you don't see them struggling, that doesn't mean they aren't! It also doesn't mean your feelings and struggles aren't valid. Every single teenager has gone through stuff like this. And will continue to do so. We can make it, we really truly can.

Maybe I don't have it all figured out. Okay, I definitely don't. But very few people do. And that's okay.

If you need any advice, or you have any advice to give on how to get through high school and move onto the next stage of life without our heads exploding, please feel free to comment.

Stay true butterflies

MyTunes: Vacation

#tbt to this Instapic

Vacation Songs
"Rather Be" by Clean Bandit  One of my all-time favorite songs, this song really gets me in a beach-y mood, perfect for spring break!

"Alone Together" by Fall Out Boy  A party anthem from one of my favorites, if they don't have you head banging nothing will

"C'Mon" by Ke$ha  Just as fun as Tic Toc with a little more panache that comes with age--perfect for partying on the road with friends

"California Gurls" by Katy Perry  A classic, 'nuff said

"Don't Stop" by 5 Seconds of Summer  This Aussie group has produced several list-worthies but none so great for spring break as this one

"Flat on the Floor" by Carrie Underwood  An oldie from Carrie but oh-so great; her powerhouse voice belts out these lyrics beautifully

"Get Your Shine On" by Florida Georgia Line  These country crooners add some much-needed twang to spring break (although the video needs some definite work--try this one instead)

"Good Times" by Tommy Lee  Once the gorgeous tattooed drummer of Mötley Crüe, Tommy Lee produced a very early-2000s track here that's still well worth a listen

"Higher" by Taio Cruz  An older track but still great for getting you pumped up for spring break shenanigans

"I Like It Like That" by Hot Chelle Rae  Remember when they were the bad boys of Radio Disney? This song at least is still relevant to spring break parties

"I Lived" by OneRepublic  A slow-er song with a killer beat (and my favorite music video ever) that I love for its reflective qualities and the starring vocals

"Popular Song" by MIKA (& Ariana Grande)  It's been out for a while, but I still love this song for a long drive or impromptu midnight dance parties with friends

"Outside" by Calvin Harris (feat. Ellie Goulding)  The techno beat of this song helps showcase Ellie's voice and it's a perfect song for partying

Honorable Mentions
"Girl Almighty", "Stockholm Syndrome", and "No Control" by One Direction  From their latest album Four, the boys (who are sexy men now actually) sound really great and these three tracks are good for spring break (SS is one of my all-time favorites)

"22" by Taylor Swift  The dance-with-your-girls' anthem, no vacation list for such a party holiday would be complete without it

"What The Hell" by Avril Lavigne  This song delivers the perfect party rock anthem, plus a big middle finger to 'normal' life

"Hit the Lights" and "Rock God" by Selena Gomez  Older tunes of hers that capture that sexy swagger that is the goal of all spring breakers (coming from a Spring Breaker herself!)

One Hundredth Post!

This whole post is full of #tbt-worthy photos....starting with the oldest of them all! This is Dad and Me a looong time ago.

Oh my gosh....I feel so old! Happy One Hundredth everybody! It definitely doesn't feel like I've been blogging long enough to have this be my 100th post already!

Les Fleurs

As anyone who knows me can tell you, I love fresh flowers! I also love arranging my own flower bouquets for home as well, when I have the opportunity. Today I walked with Aggi down to the flower stalls in front of Market! Market! and got the opportunity to arrange my own bouquet!

How to Jazz Up a Uniform

As someone who has worn a school uniform for a good 700 days of the past 1440 of my life, I think I've gotten pretty good at dressing up my uniform, and dressing around the dress code.

We can't all be blessed with Serena van der Woodsen's chic uniform

A Trip to the State Fair

This year's International Food Fest (remember this post from last year's festival?) was a different experience for all the Juniors. The Juniors are the ones that work the entire festival--we help set up, work the food booths, the game booths, sell drinks and raffle tickets, and eventually clean up. Our wonderful student council, along with the Prom Committee, organizes the entire event and run around the most all day trying to fix the little kinks and hitches.

Hair How-Tos: Sleek Flower Power

As someone constantly fiddling with her hair, I thought I'd share this newest of my little creations, something I haven't done before.

What do you get if you combine

A flower crown ponytail of course! I haven't tried a slicked-back ponytail look (hello big forehead brigade, I feel your pain) but I even still decided to jazz it up with a flower crown. I didn't want to detract from the slicked-back look though so I decided to wrap my flowers around my actual ponytail. #Perfection
Slick in the front.....
Fairytale in the back!

Add a little princess to your work-ready look with some flower power in the back! It's a simple little thing to change things up, brighten up your day maybe.

If you decide to try it, let me know how it works out for you!
